A race of “Like” across facebook – Melbourne Cup 2010

The Melbourne Cup is being held for the 150th time this year and is often described as “the race that stops the nation”. In 2010 it seems to live up to its moniker with torrential rain flooding Victoria’s capital.

But it also signals the beginning of spring, and for us at Holler it meant a fresh idea for how to best transfer a horse race onto facebook.

In my role I get the occasional DM piece from an image bank, a recruitment agency, creative school or an award show. Sometimes (and not often enough, hint hint) there is a nice surprise connected with it, like Soap Creative’s Meeting Game or tasty coco beans by freelancer Mauricio Perez.

But this one really flattened me (in the wrong kind of way).

Attention Surry Hills: Street Cricket is becoming massive…

A few Fridays ago we felt the stress of work getting to us. And instead of heading straight for the pub we found “OfficeCricket” and its rough cousin “StreetCricket” to be great tension relief.

Here is Mike dressed in Baggy Gold showing off to the rest of Holler, fine skill and posture indeed.

A few moments later quiet little Bellevue Street served as the real battleground. Mike’s batting and bowling started to shine. Firstly, knocking it for six onto a neighbour’s balcony and secondly, making Ian look very English by bowling him out straight away.

Old job / new job: Resign in style and accept with grace

I was amused and inspired by Flickr’s co-founder Stewart Butterfield’s resignation letter. Sure, when you are all cashed-up and ready to venture into something new, it is easy to take the mickey out of the business you are still in. But apparently Mr. Butterfield has managed to pull off this style for quite a while. I would work with guys like him any time. One might occasionally have to watch out for rabid ramblings in important meetings but that definitely beats playing BuzzwordBingo.

Have a read here (via valleywag) and if you are in the mood for switching jobs, why not take a leaf out of Stew’s book? If you are geekily inclined then why not write it in PHP as one commentator suggested:
