“Enter The Dragon“, Bruce Lee’s first (and only) solo big Hollywood production, ran on Australian television last weekend. So it is good timing that I have managed to pull together a video case study of my/SKOP’s “I know Where Bruce Lee Lives“. This tells the story of an ultra-interactive KungFu remixer combining the heroism and cheesiness of 70s KungFu films, the ironic use of the VHS video aesthetic with simple yet engaging interactivity. Here’s more on the making of this interactive art piece. Unfortunately we never filmed any of the live installations and performances. Teaches you to document everything well for cases like these.

Near future communication at Mojo

“Swipe, tap and eat” - a little update from the Creative Technology front at MOJO. We have partnered with Amnesia/Razorfish and the University of Sydney to develop a mobile application that could change the way we order our favourite meals. We helped MA student Stephen Davis to devise, test and program ‘BrandTable’. It is concept that allows shoppers to order food with only a tap of their mobile phone, using near-field-communication (NFC). A popular smartphone feature in Japan and Korea, NFC will sweep into the Australian market in 2012. Our video of the prototype, which you can see here, has already caught the attention of global technology blogs TechCrunch and Engadget.

We know Australians love smartphones and social networking, so we will continue to explore this technology. Any progressive creative idea, from mobile couponing, real-time scavenger hunts to launching branded films, can be propelled by NFC. And that makes it very near-future-communication for us at MOJO.

52 Suburbs around the world

A while ago I started following the excellent photo blog 52 suburbs by Louise Hawson. She is a Sydneysider who decided to a) turn her interest in photography into a full-time passion and b) discover her own home town in the process. For one year she travelled to one suburb per week,- here’s a video from her appearing at Creative Social and a previous post about her project.

By going out into the ‘burbs, the less fashionable places, she lets us see the humanity and diversity that sometimes escapes us. After turning this fantastic project into that an exhibition and a book she is now taking it further under the title “52 Suburbs Around the World “. And you might be interested in supporting her via her Kickstarter page. Watch the video below for more.

Making / Hacking Films: Creative Social Sydney

The latest Antipodean Creative Social, organised by Publicis Mojo took place at Finch, a very progressive content production company down here in Sydney. We met with Emad Tahtouh, their Head of Technology, who presented how Finch works with e.g. the Eye Writer in order to explore new creative concepts, innovative production and augmentation of video. Here is a doco of the evening.

To me it is remarkable that Finch invests in emerging and experimental technologies as they relate to video production. And if you look at Emad’s soldering table you know he is a real tinkerer. I’d be curious to know if other production companies worlwide are offering similar approaches. Or is it still left to the digital agencies to bring these new impulses into the video space?

Splendour in the Grass and on YouTube

This Sunday afternoon from 4pm onwards Splendour in The Grass will be running as a free live stream in the masthead on YouTube’s homepage as well as on Virgin Mobile’s channel. This is a first for paid media in our region so everyone here at Mojo is properly chuffed about getting this up.

Many people here including our partner agencies and Google have been working hard to make this happen. If you do live in the right region please enjoy the free stream of a pretty good line up consisting of Coldplay, Kaiser Chiefs, Cloud Control, Elbow, Vaccines and The Vines.

Even better, if you happen to be mucking around at Splendour itself, or know someone that is and/or have a Twitter or Instagram account, please participate with the hashtags #splendour, #splendourlive or #SITG . All tweets will be picked up and displayed underneath the videostream. And some of the Instagram shots might end up in The Vaccines new crowdsourced music video.

Old Spice reveal: Fabio challenges Isaiah

It seems like I and a lot of other interweb folk have been truly had – see my last post. In a very clever way W+K and Old Spice are pulling our leg: Fabio, the usurper of the scented throne has been copying the famous Responses with mixed results. But now is throwing down the gauntlet, challenging Mustafah to step up.

Respect to the creatives for reinventing the game and playing with social media in a new way. Because naturally Mustafah accepted the challenge and there will be a showdown.

As you can see from the Mexican wrestling-style announcement, it will be hand to hand combat in the bath (mano a mano in el bano). I am expecting a duel of wits, long flowing hair versus presidential abdomen, taking place in the ‘Internet Arena‘. It is about to go down in a good 7 hours (high noon EST in the US). Now ask yourself, who do you want to win ?

The rules of this video combat are easy. Go here and by watching, sharing, commenting and tweeting the support-video of either camp you contribute to the outcome. My choice is the incumbent, no surprise there.

New Old Spice Guy: Isaiah Mustafa ruled where Fabio sucks

Old Spice has changed tact and brought in drunk-housewives heartthrob Fabio Lanzoni to spruik their Foreign Scents range. And they are getting slammed with negative comments and Likes standing at 1:2 Dislikes (the original sporting 1oo:1). YouTube says no to Fabio with lines denouncing him to come “from young and sleazy to old and cheesy” and looking like “Mustafah Isaiah’s dad”.

Even though Old Spice banners everything with “New Old Spice Guy”, replacing the legendary Isaiah (who understandably tries to have a life after Old Spice) can’t really have been the aim.

Admittedly, this seems like the first blunder, one of the first mishaps in a long-running and almost genre-creating campaign.

I get the whole ironic “foreign romantic lover” angle. And some ideas like rolling around on the piano could have worked. But something went awry when they picked 80s icon Fabio, as he stumbles through the orchestra and hits the wrong note in all his videos.

It didn’t take long for facebook groups to pop up demanding to bring back Isaiah here and here. I wonder if Old Spice, who so clearly knew how to ride the waves of enthusiasm can also find a way not to wipe out on this one. What do you reckon: shall they pull the plug early or dish out Fabio till we all “get it”?

Another Greenpeace attack: Nike vs Adidas detox

It seems Greenpeace is really stepping up their game since they started to release videos that attack brands with their own visual language. This protest-ad flows in typical Adi-Nike style. I cannot judge the validity of their protest against the companies’ water pollution, but the tools Greenpeace uses have definitely evolved in recent months. On their website you can enter your own name in the adidas “(name) is all in” style and involve your friends. Vote for which one of the brands will move first and out-trump the other in correcting their environmental creds.

Even if both brands have a case of trademark infringement I doubt they will move against this – I’d say it never looks good to sue Greenpeace. Even when they attack Barbie.
