Young Cyber Lion hopefuls on their way to Cannes

The Young Cyber Lions competition finished last week, and as a sign of hope for our talent-starved industry, the round of 2011 brought a record number of entries. The winning team’s entry, conceived and produced within 24 hours as per the rules, can be seen here.

Two things stood out for me as Chairman of the jury. Firstly, the very deserved winning team was from Perth, which produces a good crop of talent (100% of Cyber and 50% of the Media winners). Perth might just not be able to hold onto it for too long. Secondly, the Cyber entries still only amount to 25% of the print entries, grossly misrepresenting the type of work flowing through almost every agency in the world.

Still too many young Australian creatives find making a great poster more achievable, or even more interesting. But at the same time, we label them ‘interactive natives’, view them as part of a well-connected generation. Even the most senior participant couldn’t have been older than 15 when sending his first email or browsing for her friends party photos.

What’s certain is that the odds of winning a Cyber ticket to Cannes were still a lot better than in any other discipline. In the interest of ever growing creative field, let’s hope the race in 2012 will be a much tougher one.

Mr Suarez gets a package

With the Vuvuzela Cup 2010 a distant memory, there is one bunch here in Sydney who have not forgotten how to properly round it up. HOST had spent many a night analysing the Cheat Factor of every game, squad and player. Now they have created, packaged and sent this lovely trophy to the most deserved winner: Mr Luis Suarez. Great way to finish an agency’s internal passion project: “Jogo Cheato Bonito”!

The FCL trophy

A congratulatory letter and some goalie gloves (for those who don’t know why) accompanies the parcel, sent to Suarez’ club Ajax Amsterdam in true Chaser-style. How good would it be to see the delivery recorded! Dear FCLsters, two requests: please put a modified version of the letter up on your facebook page so we can all re-post it on Suarez Cheatbook page. And secondly, this re-purposed Nike of a trophy needs a name!

I am sure other players like Christiano “Colt Playces!” Ronaldo will give it their worst for this honour as soon as 2012.

Client’s Facebook fans = Pitch competition

If you want to check who the competition on your next pitch really is, don’t bother trying to coax it out of your client-to-be. Simply “Become a fan” of whatever your client is doing on facebook and voila, there are your usual suspects.

Caveat: This only works if you are “friends” with at least one of the guys from competing agencies or they have diligently joined a network showing their allegiance. OK, and if the brand you are suiting has thousands of fans it might also get a bit tiresome.
